Happy Pumpkin Pillow Cover (Free Pattern)

This throw pillow cover is for the adventurous beginner crocheter venturing into colorwork.  It uses only single crochet (SC) stitches and worked back and forth.

This throw pillow cover was made using 100% acrylic yarn by Craft Smart Value yarn category #4 worsted weight in orange and black worked with a 5.0mm hook (or 5.5mm is you stitch tighter).  The finished product can easily fit any 16x16 inch pillow insert.  You may use any category #4 worsted weight yarn you like, in orange and black colors.

GAUGE OF SWATCH: A 4x4 inch square = 14 stitches (width) x 16 rows (height).

FINISHED PROJECT DIMENTIONS: 17 in x 17 in

MATERIALS:

3 skeins Craft Smart® Value Orange #4 (354 yds / 324 m : 7 oz / 198 g)
1 skein Craft Smart® Value Black #4 (354 yds / 324 m : 7 oz / 198 g)
5.0mm (or 5.5mm) crochet hook
Tape Measure
Scissors
Darning Needle
Sewing Needle
Orange-colored sewing thread
20-inch long black zipper
16 in x 16 in pillow insert

ABBREVIATIONS:

CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC-O – Single Crochet with orange-colored yarn
SC-B – Single Crochet with black-colored yarn
WS – Underside of the project (wrong side)
RS – Public side of the project (right side)

WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS: This project is worked from bottom to top, going from left to right.  Arrows indicate direction of work.

Making the Back of the Pillow Cover:

FC – Using orange-colored yarn, 64 CH + 1 CH, turn your work.
Row 1 [WS] – Using orange-colored yarn, work 64 SC-O, 1 CH, turn your work. (64)
Row 2 [RS] – Work 64 SC-O + 1 CH, turn your work. (64)
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you reached Row 64 + 1 CH, tighten and fasten off.  Thread loose ends into the project’s underside.

PIECING IT TOGETHER: It is recommended that the finished pieces are blocked before stitching them together.  Place finished pieces of the pillow cover with the wrong sides facing each other.  Piece together by stitch SCs using orange-colored yarn on 3 sides, leaving one side open.  Stitch zipper on open side.
